The South African National Holiday was celebrated on 27 April 2012 under the motto "Working Together to Build Unity and Prosperity for All". This holiday commemorates the end of apartheid and the first free elections for all South Africans 18 years ago.

Celebrations were also held in the South African Embassy in Berlin. In his speech, Ambassador Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile emphasised the strong and strategic relationship between South Africa and Germany. He acknowledged the support by Germany during the South African freedom struggle as well as the commitment of many individuals who brought South Africa where it is today.

Germany and South Africa cooperate on numerous levels. Just recently German Federal Minister of Education and Research Prof. Dr. Annette Schavan and South Africa's Minister of Science and Technology Naledi Pandor opened the German-South African Science Year 2012/2013. Launched on 16 April 2012, the intiative supports science cooperations between both countries and thereby offers a platform for exchange and joint projects.
