Workshop about the Hoffmann-Collection in October 2012 at University of South Africa and University of Pretoria.
The Day of German Unity has been the German national holiday since reunification in 1989. It is celebrated every year on 3 October and commemorates the day in 1989 when the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) officially became part of the Federal Republic of Germany. This was not only a historical turning point for Germany; it also marked the end of the Cold War and promoted European unity. Berlin became the capital and the seat of government of Germany. Germany will celebrate its national holiday for the 23rd time on 3 October 2012. The traditional festival where the states (Länder) and government present themselves on what is known as the “Länder Mile” is organised in a different state every year and will be held in Munich in the state of Bavaria in 2012. But people will also celebrate the Day of German Unity in other cities in Germany and in Germany’s foreign offices around the world. For instance, the celebrations at the Brandenburg Gate attract several thousand visitors every year. The German Embassy in Pretoria will orient this year’s embassy reception for the anniversary of German unification around the South African Year of Science.

In the German-South African Science Year 2012/2013 the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry decided to run a School Science Competition with the University of Witwatersrand. There will be prices for the top 3 teams and 5 additional prices.

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), in collaboration with Leopoldina (the German Academy of Science), with support from the National Research Foundation (NRF) and Nedbank, invites you to a two-day collaborative workshop on Technological Innovations for a Low Carbon Society to be held from 8 – 9 October 2012, at the new green-star-rated regional office Nedbank Menlyn Maine, Pretoria, South Africa. The workshop is part of the German-South African Year of Science 2012/13, which was initiated by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Within the South African Germany Year of the Sciences the University of Rostock (UR) intends to attract more cooperationpartners from the university and non-university vocational education in South Africa for the Further Education and Research Network of VET-Professionals in South Africa (VET-Net).

In the presentations students and faculty will be introduced to recent developments of discrete (differential) geometry with applications to computer graphics and mathematical visualization. The courses and hands-on exercises are aimed at students with bachelor background but provide interesting material for faculty members as well. The workshop will include software tutorials, mathematical visualizations and animated film sequences.This workshop forms part of GER-RSA Year of Science 2012 - 2013 programme of activities.

An opening workshop will be held on 10 October 2012 between 2.30 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. as part of the "f-cell" trade fair and conference event in Stuttgart with the directors of the three Competence Centres of HySA (Hydrogen South Africa), with the aim of paving the way for potential scientific and technical co-operation as well as preparing for the event in South Africa.

The South African Automotive Week is an international trade show based in Africa’s manufacturing center – Port Elizabeth. It is Africa’s automotive intellectual gathering and focuses on stimulating trade and partnership opportunities in manufacturing and the related sector.
It is endorsed and hosted by the South African industry, including the National Association for Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM), National Association of Automobile Assemblers of South Africa (NAAMSA), thedti (South African government) and other key stakeholders.
Workshop
The South African province of Gauteng has set itself the aim of developing a sustainable energy profile for the region. The first step taken was to agree a comprehensive strategy for responding to climate change. A workshop on the topic of “Biowaste to Energy” was also held at the University of Johannesburg on 11 October. As part of this event, specialists discussed the possibilities of producing energy from biowaste.
