The German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina

The Academia Naturae Curiosorum Leopoldina was founded in Schweinfurt in 1652 and is the world's oldest natural science and medical academy in continuous existence. It has been called the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2008. The Leopoldina Academy has approximately 1,400 members from around 30 countries.

The Leopoldina Academy explores, independently of economic or political interests, important social issues of the future from a scientific point of view and communicates the results to policymakers and the general public. Its international responsibilities include representing German science in European and global academic committees and advising international policymakers with scientifically-based findings. Its activities, together with its partner academies, are also oriented around scientific conferences, workshops and symposiums in Germany or in the respective partner country.

The Leopoldina Academy cultivates close and friendly ties in South Africa with the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). The relationships are based on scientific contacts between members and the positive cooperation in the international academic committees. ASSAf also assumes a key role in the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) with which the Leopoldina Academy cooperates in the framework of a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). This provides a platform for regular exchange between the two academies.
