The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB)

The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) is the recognised centre of excellence for vocational research and for the progressive development of vocational education and training (VET) in Germany. The BIBB works to identify future challenges in VET, stimulate innovation in national and international vocational systems and develop new, practically oriented solutions for both basic and advanced vocational education and training.

Upon request, the BIBB invites African partners to participate in fact-finding missions in Germany where they can learn about the German system of vocational education and training. The Institute also puts out trade publications on sub-Saharan Africa that address issues relevant to development.

To continue the discussions on bilateral cooperation in vocational training that had previously taken place in Germany, the BIBB took part in a delegation of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) that travelled to South Africa in 2010 and met with political decision-makers, among them representatives of the Department of Higher Education and Training. Basic insight was gained on the current status of the South African vocational education system in these discussions and contact was established and experiences shared among key actors who are currently working on updating and realigning the vocational education system in South Africa. Interests shared by the two countries for cooperation were identified as a result of the delegation trip. A visit by the South Africans to Germany is planned for 2012 to negotiate the content of the partnership.
